Yellow Jackets
Black and yellow and about half an inch long. They nest in the ground, in wall voids, and in attics, and they are the most common cause of stings in New Jersey. They can sting more than once.
A hornet or wasp nest near a doorway, deck, or play area puts everyone at risk of getting stung. Yellow jackets and hornets defend their nests hard, and colonies grow larger and more aggressive as summer goes on. Endeavor Pest Control treats and removes nests from homes and businesses across Hillsborough Township and Somerset County. Call (732) 515-7900 for fast service.
Do not plug the hole or spray into an opening. A blocked entrance can send yellow jackets through the drywall and into your living space.

Black with white markings on the face. They build large, gray, football shaped paper nests in trees, shrubs, and under eaves, and they defend them aggressively.
Large, brown and yellow, and over an inch long. They nest in hollow trees, barns, and wall voids, and unlike most wasps, they fly at night and are drawn to porch lights.
Slender, with long dangling legs. They build open, umbrella shaped nests under eaves, railings, and grill covers. They are less aggressive than yellow jackets but will sting if the nest is disturbed.
Thin, black or metallic blue wasps that build tube shaped mud nests on walls and ceilings. They rarely sting, but their nests are unsightly and keep coming back.
A single sting hurts. Several stings at once, which is common when someone steps on a ground nest or bumps a hive, can be dangerous, and for people with allergies, one sting can trigger a severe reaction. Yellow jackets and hornets can sting repeatedly and will chase what they see as a threat.
Store bought sprays often fail to reach the queen and the center of the nest, and an angry colony is the result. Nests inside walls are even harder, because blocking the entrance can push them into your home. Professional removal means treating the whole colony and taking the nest down once it is safe to do so.
Our process is thorough, safe, and built around protecting your home and family. Here is what to expect when you call Endeavor.
We locate the nest, identify the species, and decide on the safest way to reach it.
We treat the nest directly to eliminate the colony, including nests in the ground, in trees, and inside walls.
Once the colony is no longer active, we remove nests that can be reached and check for any others on the property.
We point out gaps and attractants that could lead to new nests and explain how to keep wasps from coming back.
Wasp season in Somerset County starts in April and May, when queens come out of hiding and start small nests, often no bigger than a golf ball. Colonies grow all summer and reach their largest size in August and September. That is when yellow jackets are most aggressive, because they are hunting for sugar around trash cans, picnics, and fallen fruit. After the first hard frost, the workers die and only the new queens survive the winter. Old nests are not reused, but new queens often build nearby the following spring.

Answers to the questions Hillsborough homeowners and businesses ask us most.
It depends on the species. Paper wasps build open, umbrella shaped nests where you can see the cells. Yellow jackets and hornets build enclosed, gray paper nests with one entrance, often shaped like a ball or football. Mud daubers build rows of mud tubes on walls.
Many do. Yellow jackets often nest in old rodent burrows, under landscape timbers, and in soft soil. They also nest in wall voids and attics. A steady line of yellow jackets flying in and out of a hole in the lawn is a sure sign of a ground nest.
They are very defensive near their nest and will sting repeatedly. They get more aggressive in late summer, when colonies are large and workers are hunting for sugar. Keep people and pets away from any nest until it is treated.
Most do. The workers die after the first hard frost, and only newly mated queens survive the winter, hidden in logs, leaf litter, or wall voids. The old nest is not reused, but a new queen may start another nest nearby in spring.
Do not seal the opening or spray into it. Blocking the entrance can force the wasps to chew through drywall and into your home. Keep the area clear and call a professional to treat the nest from the outside.
Early in the season, when nests are small and colonies are easier to control. That said, any nest near a door, walkway, or play area should be treated right away, no matter the time of year.
